Crested Gecko Care Sheet

crested gecko

Description

The crested Gecko originates from New Caledonia these nocturnal Geckos vary in colour and have pointed scales starting above their eyes and reaching all the way down to the base of the tail. They have a life span of 5+ years and can ascertain a size of 6 - 7inches in length. These Geckos are arboreal they have a prehensile tail which they use for climbing and should be provided with a forest setup with lots of plants and vines.

Housing

As Crested Geckos are an arboreal lizard they should be provided with plenty of height to enable climbing with dense planting and vines so they can hide and feel secure in the daytime. A basic setup for these lizards should comprise of a tall enclosure such as the Exo Terra Glass Terrarium range approximate size of no smaller than 30 x 30 x 45cm for a single Crested Gecko with a heat mat controlled by a mat stat on the outside of the terrarium to give a background heat. For substrate we find that using bedding such as Exo Terra Plantation Soil gives the best results as this retains the moisture and helps create humidity in the enclosure which should be kept at around 70%, daily misting of the enclosure also helps keep the humidity up and provides droplets on the plants from which Crested Geckos will drink. If you wish to provide lighting then a canopy over the terrarium with either 2% uv;s or moonlights for gentle lighting is preferred. Provide temperatures of mid 70s°F at the cool end (bottom of the enclosure) to 82°F - 84°F at the warmer end of the enclosure (top) any lighting you have provided should be turned off at night.

Diet

Crested Geckos are Omnivores they eat both live foods such as small crickets and hoppers and fruit, both should be provided and feeding as adults we would recommend every other day. Using T-Rex Crested Gecko diet is a good way of ensuring your Crested Gecko has access to the fruit he needs. Dusting of both crickets and fruit mixtures with a calcium supplement should be done twice a week. Crested Geckos have calcium sacs at the back of their mouths if your Geckos calcium sacs are very small then this shows he requires more calcium.
Any uneaten Fruits or live foods that have grown too big for your Gecko should be removed, We also suggest that as Crested Geckos are nocturnal feeding should be done in the evenings.

Handling

Crested Geckos will tolerate handling but some more than others, handling should be kept to a minimum especially when small. Crested Geckos like many other lizards can drop their tails but this does not grow back.
