Columbian Rainbow Boa Care Sheet

Description

The Columbian Rainbow Boa originates from southern America, they can ascertain a length of 5 - 7ft. These beautiful semi arboreal snakes have a rainbow iridescence which shows up under sunlight. The Columbian Rainbow Boa has very similar markings to the Brazilian rainbow boa, the only difference in appearance is the body colour of the Columbian is more of a brown colouration rather than the orange colours of the Brazilian. This usually makes the Brazilian rainbow boa a more popular choice but their temperaments are the same.

Housing

As hatchlings we would suggest to keep these snakes in a hatchling setup as with any baby snake they should not be introduced to a big environment straight away as this makes them feel insecure and you are more likely to suffer feeding and shedding problems with your hatchling snake. When they have gained sufficient length and girth they could be moved up into a larger environment such as the Triple 8 reptiles Boa setup.
Temperature should be slightly warmer than that of the Brazilian rainbow boa, with the warm end at 86-88°F and the cool end at high seventies. All temperatures should be controlled by a suitable thermostat (see choosing a thermostat) for more information.
They should be provided with an atmospheric humidity of approx 60-80% this can help to be maintained by regular misting of the enclosure using a spray bottle and having a large water bowl in the enclosure placed near the heat source. Also choosing a substrate such as Triple 8 Reptiles orchid bark with live sphagnum moss or Komodo cypress terrain as these are great for holding moisture and helping keep humidity levels up. Humidity can be monitored with the use of hygrometers there are many types available from analogue to digital.
Although Columbian Rainbow Boas do not require lighting we do advise that they are provided with it as this helps to give a day/night cycle. Use a 2% UVB  and this can be on for approx 10-12 hours per day the use of timers is advisable.
Provide the Columbian Rainbow Boa as with all snakes plenty of hiding areas at both the warm and cool areas of the vivarium.
Also lots of climbing vines and branches with abundant plants to make your Columbian Rainbow Boa feel secure.

Feeding and Handling

When babies these are usually started off with pinkie mice and then as the snake grows the size of food offered also becomes larger. As adults you will probably be feeding a weaner rat or a small rat depending on size.
For feeding we usually take our adult boas out of their enclosure and place them in plastic boxes to feed. This ensures they do not ingest any of the substrate when feeding.
Hatchlings feed every 5-7 days and adults feed every 7-10 days. Always feed your boa with tweezers or forceps never by hand.

Handling should not take place after feeding for at least 48 hours so they can have time to digest their food properly.
