Oriental Fire-Bellied Toad Care Sheet

Description

These beautiful little toads are a real delight to watch and are inexpensive to buy. They are a communal species, so you can keep a small group of them provided you have a larger enclosure such as a 65 x 45 x 45 cm Exo Terra Glass Terrarium. If you listen carefully at night, you can hear them communicating with each other. Their fantastic colouration makes these very popular amphibians.

Housing

A 30 x 30 x 45 cm Exo Terra Glass Terrarium or equivalent is an ideal enclosure for a pair of Oriental Fire-Bellied Toads. Because they are an aquatic species, this terrarium is perfect as it is water tight, so you don't need to worry if water spills out from the large water bowl that must be provided. If you wish to keep a group of these toads it is advised that they be kept in a 65 x 45 x 45 cm Exo Terra Glass Terrarium. A damp moss or peat based substrate is ideal, such as Orchid Bark mixed with some organic compost and lots of hiding places should be provided. Wooden caves and hideouts are ideal for this. Providing plenty of plastic or silk plants is also beneficial as they like to climb.

Lighting

Although lighting is not essential with this species of toad, nonetheless you may wish to provide some for your own viewing benefit. Additionally, to add further character to the enclosure, the incorporation of a Exo Terra Night Glo Lamps (which provide a blue light at night) is highly recommended.

Temperature and Humidity

These toads should be given a temperature of 68-77°f with 60-80% humidity. Spray daily to help maintain the humidity. Another way to maintain humidity would be to add a waterfall and fogger system (both relatively inexpensive) which also adds character to the enclosure. It is vital that the temperature of the enclosure does not get any higher than 80°f as the toads protective coating will become weak, which could lead to health problems. Regularly changing the water in the water bowl (preferably with bottled water) will aid with this.

Feeding

Oriental Fire-bellied Toads should be fed on a diet of Small Hoppers or Small Crickets. If you purchase your toads from ourselves we can also advise you as to the particular food we have been feeding them. They should be fed every other day.
