Description
These stunning frogs originate from Central America and Mexico. Female Red Eyed Tree Frogs can ascertain a size of up to 3 inches, however males will only reach around 1 inch. Therefore once fully grown, these are relatively easy to determine the sex of a specimen. They have a beautiful green body with orage toes and blue down their sides. The Red Eyed Tree Frogs are amongst the most popular Tree Frog species, however they are also amongst the hardest Tree Frogs to come by, as they are only successfully bred during their breeding season.
Housing
The Red-Eyed Tree Frogs should be housed in a larger Glass enclosure such as a 60 x 45 x 60 cm Exo Terra Glass Terrarium. This would be ideal for a pair or trio. Their big red eyes are used for hunting at night, so provide with plenty of shady hiding areas for the daylight hours. Provide with a rainforest terrarium habitiy consisting of lots of climbing vines and plants and a water bowl, but not so deep so that they cannot get out of it.
Lighting
Although lighting is not essential with this species of Tree Frog, nonetheless you may wish to provide some for your own viewing benefit. Additionally, to add further character to the enclosure, the incorporation of a Exo Terra Night Glo Lamps (which provide a blue light at night) is highly recommended.
Temperature and Humidity
These frogs should be given a temperature of 72 - 82°f with 50-70% humidity. Spray daily to help maintain the humidity. Another way to maintain humidity would be to add a waterfall and fogger system (both relatively inexpensive) which also adds character to the enclosure.
Feeding
Red-Eye Tree Frogs should be fed on a diet of Small Hoppers or Small Crickets. If you purchase your Tree Frogs from ourselves we can also advise you as to the particular food we have been feeding them. They should be fed every other day.
