Description
The Tiger Salamander originates from Southern Canada down to Northern Mexico. They have a dark grey body with yellow to orange markings. Although not as colourful as the Fire Salamander, the Tiger Salamander is still an attractive and popular species. These salamanders can ascertain a length of up to 13".
Housing
Provide a terrarium such as the 65 x 45 x 45 cm Exo Terra Glass Terrarium (as they are watertight so you don't need to worry about water spills). This sized terrarium is suitable for an adult pair, and if a group is wanted, a larger enclosure will be necessary. Although adult Tiger Salamanders are primarily terrestrial, they do require a large water bowl so that they can soak if they wish. The substrate provided should be a sphagnum moss and peat mix. Plenty of hiding areas such as Zoo Med Habba Huts and a deep substrate for digging is essential.
Lighting
Although lighting is not essential with this species of salamander, nonetheless you may wish to provide some for your own viewing benefit. Additionally, to add further character to the enclosure, the incorporation of a Exo Terra Night Glo Lamps (which provide a blue light at night) is highly recommended. The Exo Terra Compact Tops, and Dual Canopies are specifically designed for use with the Exo Terra Glass Terrariums and are highly recommended by us.
Temperature and Humidity
These toads should be given a temperature of 68-71°f with 80-100% humidity. At night their enclosure should be slightly cooler. Spray daily to help maintain the humidity. Another way to maintain humidity would be to add a waterfall and fogger system (both relatively inexpensive) which also adds character to the enclosure. It is vital that the temperature of the enclosure does not get any higher than 80°f as the salamanders protective coating will become weak, which could lead to health problems. Regularly changing the water in the water bowl (preferably with bottled water) will aid with this.
Feeding
Tiger Salamanders should be fed on a diet of Small Hoppers or Small Crickets. If you purchase your salamanders from ourselves we can also advise you as to the particular food we have been feeding them. They should be fed every other day. Occasional small fish pieces can also be fed as a treat.
